Throughout my lifetime, I’ve always admired people who studied the Martial Arts. I admired the discipline, the dedication, and the way of life for which it stood. So, after turning 40, I had not even considered becoming a Martial Artist myself. I figured it was really not something for someone my age and it was even a little scary. So, I was somewhat surprised when Master Beltavski invited me to class in late 2004. I was pretty hesitant, but decided that I had a lot of newfound free time after finishing up my Master’s Degree, so why not. My kids were a little older and didn't depend on me as much, so I went to class. Little did I know when I said yes to this program how hard it would be to coordinate my mind and body for what seemed like simple moves, but that were really so complicated at first. So much to think about at once! (And I thought I was pretty smart!) I couldn’t do a front stance or back stance, let alone work a block in with it! It was pretty tough in the beginning and there were many times I felt a little embarrassed and thought, “Why am I doing this to myself! How humiliating!” But with each class I actually remembered something from the class before. And everyone was so nice and helpful. So I decided to stay and continue with the training. To this day, I still do not consider myself a really good Martial Artist. I don’t win first place for forms or breaking, and I tend to freeze under pressure. But I’m still here, and in December 2006 took the Black Belt Test. Wow! Sometimes I still feel like I am dreaming, and can't believe that I actually did it. And to know that it is something that I will have for the rest of my life is amazing. It has given me a new sense of self – a self that never thought I could do it. Sometimes my body aches, but I work through it just like all the other over 40s (and they know who they are!). And I’ve never been a performer ~ it literally scares me to death to be “judged” in front of people. But I remind myself that the other Martial Artists in the room want nothing but success for me. They want me to do well, and most of all, they want me to keep growing and improving. It is such a great feeling to know that so many people genuinely care about you and about your journey to becoming a great Martial Artist. Martial Arts has taught me so much about caring about other people, especially those that I can coach and encourage. I know that with time and continued practice I will become a better Martial Artist. I feel like my journey has just begun. And it doesn’t matter how old you are, how small you are, or whether you think you can do it or not. It’s about trying and not giving up. It’s about finding the Artist inside of you and giving it your full attention. It’s about the journey and the lifelong friends you will make along the way. I don’t doubt that I can do just about anything now... if I try, and I surround myself with the people I have come to know through T&T. Thank you to everyone for encouraging me on this journey, and I hope I can inspire my classmates as they have inspired me. Respectfully, Sue Crawford, Cho Dan T&T Martial Arts, Ltd. For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Eric Jones. My Wife, Susan, and oldest son Johnny, studied under Master Beltavski for many years and received our Black Belts while we lived in Cleveland from 1999 to 2007. In fact, I didn't live in Cleveland when I received my 1st Degree. Master Beltavski's first Black Belt was my best friend Kirk Greiner, who lives in Chicago now. Every Tuesday and Friday, we would drive to Master Beltavski's house and workout in his basement. Picture that, two of us for an hour straight, with Master Beltavski watching our every move. Pure torture. He was also kind enough to work choke holds on us while he developed Rohndo. As you all know by now, he perfected them! I remember having headaches for days. Kirk and I did our entire Colored Belt Promotion Testing in his basement too. Miss Tina would come down to adjudicate our forms and Master Beltavski would oversee the rest of the test. Just before we were to start training for our Black Belt I tore a right Medial Collateral Ligament and had to watch my training partner move forward without me. Soon after that, Susan and I moved from Cleveland back to my hometown in Iowa months later. While in Iowa I trained in other Dojangs but missed the intensity and world class instruction I was accustomed to with Master Beltavski. So, Master Beltavski talked me into coming back to Cleveland to be assessed for a Black Belt Promotion. I left the Dojangs behind me and trained in my basement and did all of my forms in the garage. The winters were horrible. I remember shoveling ice from the garage floor and working the heavy bag, then removing my shoes for forms. I remember reading a printout of an E-Mail from Master Beltavski which contained the movements for Chung Moo. Susan, who hadn't been interested in Tae Kwon Do, thought that I was nuts. I remember driving my Jeep to Cleveland for the Pre-Test. The 7 Hour Pre-Test, with grappling at the end, with a fresh, 300 pound opponent, was a most refreshing way to spend a weekend. I remember that I had holes in my feet from doing my forms... three times each, on the concrete in his basement, and then temporarily going into an irregular heart rhythm. Well, Master Beltavski got me through a grueling Black Belt Test in Gary Horejsei's basement! Years later, Master Beltavski hired me and moved me back to Cleveland. It was there that I promoted to E-Dan and my wife, Susan, and Johnny to Cho-Dan. Since then we have moved to Seattle and I am the Senior Sales Engineer for the Channel Group at a company called Speakeasy. I am training again in much the same way I did in Iowa. I have only one Dojang, T&T. We Jones' are so proud to come from the Heritage of Master Kim and Master Beltavski. Although the aspects of ongoing training at T&T have many obvious benefits, the one immeasurable benefit that I employ on a daily basis while at work at Speakeasy is that whenever things get heated or difficult it has become second nature for me to rely on my Black Belt Spirit and remain calm, strike when there is an opening and remain humble. In fact, Speakeasy is a very political company and my lack of political motivation has created both career success and curiosity among my peers. It is absolute proof to me that the mental edge and indomitable spirit are the most difficult to discern, and yet the most valuable benefits I've harvested from my training under Master Beltavski. Every day I remain, in my heart, mind, and body, a T&T Black Belt and an altogether different breed. Send us an E-Mail when you can, me at ewjhawkeye@gmail.com, and Susan at squeezyjones@gmail.com. God Bless, — Eric Jones, E-Dan T&T Martial Arts, Ltd.

Dear Students:I am extremely proud to report that Beth McCluskey, E-Dan at our Lyndhurst School, has just completed her Nurse Officer Basic Course with the United States Army in San Antonio, Texas, as a reservist. Out of a class of 216 soldiers, she was the top female scorer on the Army's physical fitness test. She was also the 2nd highest score overall! Scoring 337 points on the test, she was just 4 points behind the top male soldier who scored a 341. The fitness test is comprised of 3 parts: 2 minutes of push-ups, 2 minutes of sit-ups, and a 2-mile run. Beth did 45 push-ups, 85 sit-ups, and ran a 15:45 2-mile run! Even though Beth was just a little older than a "few" ;) of the other soldiers present, she attributes her tough Tae Kwon Do training to keeping her in top physical condition so that she could excel in the United States Army. This is a truly amazing accomplishment, and I am asking ALL T&T Students to please extend Mrs. McCluskey your most sincere congratulations! Beth can be reached at: beth.m.mccluskey@us.army.mil Beth, from myself and Tina, and all your T&T Family, congratulations on a most astounding performance. We are all so very proud of you! It was early Saturday morning. I woke up and slid both of my feet to the floor. I sat up and started to think about what today was... it was Tournament day! I was thinking about all of the hard work and preparation that had lead up to today. It was time to get moving! I arrived at the Middleburg Heights Recreation Center early at 2:00 PM to line up rings and get the tournament set up with seating and tables. The whole time, there was an energy flowing through me that was pure excitement. People started to arrive, slowly filling up the gym. A lot of hugs and high fives took place at this point. People were excited to be together. It was the energy of The Family's presence that was building the excitement. People were so proud and ready to fight. The room starts to fill up with Master Instructors, Sa Bum Nim, Udanja, Ugoopja & Supporting Family Members. Then, all of a sudden, there is a loud call out to, "Stop, Turn, Face Grand Master Kim". Everyone was very happy to see Grand Master Kim come out to see his children fight one more time! Things are about to get underway now. We are ready to go. Rings are sectioned off, flags are in place, stop watches ready, and the divisions are all lined up. The juniors are up to fight first. The volume and excitement increased as the fighting began. So many amazing children stepped up to compete. I watched Abbey Hermes compete as the only girl in her division against juniors like Keenan Harden Jr., Brendan Tracy, Jonathon Ockunzzi and so many others. These are tough kids! The pride in the room was amazing. Most amazing of all was the amount of integrity that was possessed by our juniors. They were awesome! It made me proud as an instructor to see this beauty carry over to places outside of their dojang. The Colored Belt Adults were slated next. Excited and ready to fight, they took their places at their assigned rings and awaited their turns. This is where things got really interesting! The Women's Adult Colored Belt Divisions were off the charts. The amount of energy and heart that was displayed was truly exceptional. I watched women like Nikki Tracy, Keely Bindas, Susan Erne, Trina Murphy, & Jess Gallagher fight their hearts out, only to hug each other after and share their excitement across the whole tournament. The Men's Colored Belt Division was top notch. I was a corner judge in that division and got to see some serious fighting potential from these men. I saw Mike Skoczen, David Martin Sr., Tad Fitch and Martin Hermes bang it out in their division. These guys were something else. I saw tremendous spirit in the face of Martin Hermes, who, as a Yellow Belt, was fighting Mike Skoczen who is a Deputy Black (Mike Skoczen is also a 4-Time PMT Lyndhurst Finalist)! This was the kind of experience you cannot simulate. Hat's off to all of you in that division! Next up was, drum roll please... Black Belt Division! The tension was building and the time had come. We were all lined up in our divisions with Head Referees Master Dave Zivkovic, Master Jane Zarzeczny and Master Tim Pae. The women competed in Ring #1 and the men in Ring #2. This is where my story becomes kind of one sided since the narrator was actually in the ring fighting and unable to witness most of the fights in the other ring until later after seeing the video footage! I knew that my competition was going to be high this year. It was my third time defending the Women's Grand Championship Title. My division was none other that Elizabeth Erne & Beth McCluskey! These women are tough! No easy fights here! After a lot of loud fighting and a ton of great techniques from all in the ring, I won my division and was ready to advance to the Championships. Well, on the other side of the room, Jess McKay and Jess Gallagher had also won their divisions and were slated for the Grand Championship as well. In all of my years of competing, a Deputy Black Belt had never made it to the Grand Championships. Jess Gallagher did! Way to go Jess! On the other side, the Men's Black Belt Division was moving quickly with a lot of hard and amazing fights. Aaron DiBlasi, Mike Campisi and Eric Hendrickson battled it out, while Anthony Murphy, Chris Molakakis, and Chris van Heeckeren fought it out for their division. In the end it was Aaron Di Blasi, Division 1 Winner, against Anthony Murphy, Division 2 Winner, for the Men's Grand Championship. Now we breathe... and quickly... for the Women's Grand Championship eliminations are up first. The first Grand Championship round was Jess McKay vs Jess Gallagher! These women were something else. Head-shot attempt after head-shot attempt, it was a pure Tae Kwon Do spectacle! In the end Jess McKay won and was slated to fight me for Final Grand Championship match! Jess and I squared off and the flood gates opened wide. We went at it!
Ok, Ok... now back to the story... We are throwing shot after shot and the score is 3-1 in Jess's favor. I was down and the time was running out. I came back with a crescent kick head shot and it was 3-3. Then I was lucky enough to score with a left front leg skip-round to her chin! It was tough, but I took the title for the third time and the gym lit up! We fought so hard that there was no loser. The ultimate climax was in the last fight... Aaron vs Murph. (Imagine scary music in the background... dunn dunn dunn dunn!) These guys were right out of a "How to Fight Great" Instructional Video. Classic & clean techniques showered their fight. It was 2-2 at the end of their 3-Minute Round. Sudden-Death-Overtime was imminent! One minute was added to the clock... the next point would win. The gym was on their feet. Master Dave Zivkovic starts them off and the anticipation grows. Aaron scores a point and the judges say "Not enough!". Murph scores a point and the judges say, "Not enough!". Finally, Murph throws a Crescent Kick across Aaron's nose for a clean final shot. The gym exploded with excitement. They fought so well. Anthony Murphy took the PMT SGC Men's Grand Champion! After some much deserved cheers, hugs, and high fives, the crowd settled and Master Ted Beltavski and Grand Master Kim awarded the trophies to Murph and myself and dismissed the tournament. I cannot express my happiness to have been such a big part of this tournament. For those of you who know the history of the PointMaster Program, this was a monumental occasion for Aaron and I. We created this concept almost 5 years ago and it was amazing to see what it has grown into. All of the PointMaster Competitors from both Lyndhurst & Middleburg showed a tremendous advantage in their tournament performance and I could not be more proud of where the program has gone. Thanks to all of you who train hard, fight harder, and live through an example of integrity. You are why we continue to do this. A special thanks to Master Ted & Tina Beltavski. You both support and believe in the strength of our T&T Family, and without that we would not have the ability to share in such wonderful events. Today begins the training for next year's tournament. I'll see you on the tape at the next PointMaster Annual! - Melissa Di Blasi, Sam Dan Chief Instructor & Director of Scheduling & Instructor Training, Lyndhurst School (Melissa.DiBlasi@TandTMartialArts.com)

Armed with the proper knowledge, one can avoid becoming a victim in the first place, which in itself is the very truest definition of Martial Arts. "Armed With Knowledge" Seminars cover both psychological and physical self defense techniques that ANYONE can use to remove themselves, or loved ones, from a potentially violent situation. From an 8 year-old child playing on a playground, to a 65 year old adult in a parking lot at night, "Armed With Knowledge" can provide vital information that could one day save a life, perhaps even yours. Some "Armed With Knowledge" Themes from past Seminars:

Hello to all of my T&T Family Members back in the states! We (My Family and I) are just outside Tokyo, Japan on one of the mountain range base lakes on a mountain range that opposes Mount Fuji (Background of Photo). They live near here. This particular location on the mountain is where the Shogun in ancient times made people leave their weapons as they traveled to Tokyo. There were no weapons allowed in Tokyo at that time. Now it is a recreation area. I apologize for the wrinkles in the Uniform, but I had to stow it in my camera bag on my trek up the Mountain. The hike was the real workout! Please know that the T&T Family is being well represented throughout Japan! I look forward to seeing all of you when I return! Respectfully, — Maureen Garnett, 2nd Degree Black Belt, Lyndhurst School maureen.garnett@gmail.com

Hello T&T Family Members, As the title suggests, Larry (The LTrain) Lewis got “Gracied” on Monday, March 26th, 2007. Many of my friends have affectionately adopted the nickname “LTrain” for me due to my home town being Chicago Illinois; for those of you who have not visited this great City, the Elevated Train is an efficient and lightning fast transit system that transports millions of persons a year in and out of the Windy City. Before I share with you my exciting adventure training at the First Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy established in the United States, allow me to first give you a snapshot of who I am. Firstly, I’ve been blind since birth, and take great pride in being able to treat big problems as obstacles which require only focus and planning to overcome them. Last November I visited the T&T Martial Arts Headquarters in Lyndhurst and was warmly welcomed by Master Ted Beltavski, Miss Melissa Di Blasi, and Mr. Kevin Slodic. I had obtained my brown belt in Tae Kwon Do approximately fifteen years ago, but life caught up with me, and regrettably, I neglected to continue on the journey that I started many years ago. I’m so grateful for Master Ted, Master Rick, Melissa, Aaron, and all the great students who train with me for inspiring me to continue what I started, and I am both humbled and honored to be a T&T Martial Arts Student. Last year, prior to visiting the T&T Dojang, I began a new journey studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu. For those of you who are not familiar with Gracie Jiu Jitsu, you can learn more by visiting www.evolutionjj.com. I have a few years of high school wrestling under my belt as well as some training in Sho ryn ru Karate, but the Gracie System of Self-Defense has really exposed to me how weak my ground game is, and also motivated me to embrace Master Ted’s Rohndo Classes as a compliment to what I am learning in my Gracie Jiu Jitsu training. I am both fortunate and blessed to have started my own consulting business. Much of what I do requires a fair amount of travel. So, whenever I get to chance to train with other individuals around this great country, I seize the opportunity to do so. I had some business to conduct in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, and decided prior to my trip to set aside some time to train at the first Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy established in the United States. In 1989, Master Rorion Gracie and his brothers opened this establishment in Torrance, California, about a thirty minute drive from the LAX Airport. For those of you who are not familiar with the Gracie Family, Rorion Gracie helped to found the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. His brother, Royce, immediately won three out of the first four UFC tournaments and was undefeated in Mixed Martial Arts competition until his unfortunate loss to Matt Hughes last year. The Patriarch and Founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Master Hélio Gracie is 94 years old, and still conducts classes in his son’s Academy. So I set up a private lesson with Renner Gracie, Rorion’s son, and Helio’s grandson. When I arrived that morning, I was greeted warmly by Renner who opened the Academy. We quickly became acquainted, and after signing the necessary paperwork, we changed clothes and hit the mats. The hour that I spent with Renner was amazing! He packed so much action and knowledge into those 60 minutes. For those of you who participate In Rohndo, he worked with me on some excellent defenses against strikes from within my guard. He also gave me some great pointers on both my arm-bar and triangle choke from the guard. We concluded the training by working some clinches and take-downs from the feet. Finally, I implored Renner to give me a taste of what it’s like to “roll” with a Gracie family member, and he was eager to oblige. He had me so tied up in knots, but talked to me the whole time and transformed the “roll” into a learning experience for me. After finishing my private lesson, I joined some other students and received another hour of training from Renner in a class setting which was also an incredible experience. I worked with an individual who was heavier than me and a great partner for me on some basics from the feet as well as some drills on the ground. I concluded my visit with a trip to the Academy’s store and bought a number of shirts and patches — I simply couldn’t resist! I also managed to score a pretty excellent picture of Renner taking me to the “Gracie wood shed”! (See above.) I was treated so warmly by everyone, and the experience was one that I’ll never forget. I plan to incorporate trips to this Academy whenever I am fortunate enough to visit LA. For those of you who are in Rohndo, I’d like to share with you some similarities between what we work on in Rohndo and what I worked on at the Gracie Academy. Firstly, both Master Ted and Renner have a very methodical, thorough way of explaining things; this not only provides a great structure for their classes, but this thorough approach to instruction really works well for me. Both are very approachable and welcome questions. Both offer very helpful guidance, although Master Ted accentuates positive progress while Renner was pretty rough on me when I deserved it! Both throw themselves into their classes and are active participants with their students. Both have very sound techniques and both are hard for me to handle in my closed guard. Probably the biggest difference between Rohndo and Gracie Jiu Jitsu is that Rohndo approaches its moves and counters with a high degree of explosiveness. The Gracie way is a little more fluid and less explosive. Neither style is right or wrong, and actually, I am beginning to understand how both styles compliment each other while on the ground. I think that the conservation of energy and focus on fluid movements enables you to conserve the energy necessary to explode with high impact counter moves when you need to do so. Finally, I’d like to say that while my time at the Gracie Academy was amazing, I really feel blessed to be part of the T&T Family on a daily basis. We really have world class training at our disposal at a Cleveland price point. I can tell you that a fundamental difference between the Gracie Academy and T&T Martial Arts is the money spent by their consumers. The Gracie training was worth every penny, but definitely more expensive than T&T. So, while my time at the Gracie Academy was wonderful, and while I will definitely keep in touch with Renner Gracie, it feels good to be home. I’m looking so forward to continuing to train with those of you in Lyndhurst, and thank you so much for reading this article. In closing, I would like to conclude by simply encouraging all of you to embrace your Martial Arts training as a journey through life. My quality of life has improved drastically over the past year, and I owe it all to my multi-disciplinary approach to the Martial Arts, along with the great instruction that I have been getting. While I regret the unnecessary hiatus in my Martial Arts journey, I’m now focusing on the future and have set some physical and emotional goals which hinge upon my Martial Arts performance while frequenting the dojang. Don’t be afraid to set goals for yourself. If this terribly average blind guy can accomplish some things in his TKD and Rohndo Classes, then you certainly can if you put your mind to it and follow a flexible plan for a successful outcome. Please feel free to contact me if you need some encouragement, for one of my strengths is is being able to motivate others. Until we meet in the Dojang, all the best and stay safe! — Larry Lewis, T&T Martial Arts Taekwondo and Rohndo Student E-Mail: Larry.Lewis@Flying-Blind.com

Rules and Regulations for the 1st Annual 2007 "Spring Break" Breaking Championship were detailed in the initial announcement, and are still available on the Home/News page of the T&T Website. Since this announcement, many of you have inquired as to how the 1st Annual 2007 "Spring Break" Breaking Championship will determine a Grand Champion once all Black Belt Divisions have competed and the winner of each Division has been determined. To answer this question, and fulfill many curiosities, I offer the following: A timed sequence of "Combat Breaking" will be utilized to determine the 1st Annual 2007 "Spring Break" Breaking Championship Grand Champion. Each Black Belt Division Winner will have 5 Seconds to break as many single boards as possible in the time allotted. During the final "Combat Breaking" portion, multiple holders will be utilized for each Black Belt Division Winner and these boards will be provided by the panel. In the event of a final tie, Black Belt Division Winners will engage in "Combat Breaking" yet again, until a single 1st Annual 2007 "Spring Break" Breaking Championship Grand Champion is determined. Call your friends. Call your family. No one will want to miss the action on Saturday, March 24th! Respectfully, - Master Ted Beltavski E-Mail: MasterTed@TandTMartialArts.com Mobile: (440) 552-7635

Many of you have also indicated that printing from the T&T Website wasted a great deal of your ink in printing the solid borders and photos that line the left and right sides of the T&T Website. I am pleased to announce that this will NO LONGER be an issue for any T&T Student. I have mandated that our web developers implement Print Friendly Version pages for each of our Rank Requirements, Class Schedules, and Registration Pages throughout the T&T Website. These new "Print Friendly Version" Links, indicated by the presence of the printer icon above, will launch a separate page containing the same information from the page on which the link was clicked, but minus the borders and photos, and centered to print horizontally across a single sheet of paper. It is my hope that this new functionality will serve to increase our means of disseminating necessary information to each member of the T&T Family. Spectators may attend FREE OF CHARGE but seating will be limited. Standing room is always available. I, like many of you, look forward to observing the many strategies that are going to be utilized during this competition. It seems that the strategy-oriented nature of our 1st Annual "Spring Break" Breaking Championship has many of our Martial Arts Family signing up that would not normally compete in a breaking event. This influx of new talent is going to make the 2007 1st Annual "Spring Break" Breaking Championship one event that you will not want to miss!
